Helping others reach their potential

My academic journey began when I was 19 years old. Upon graduating from high school, I was conflicted between attending college or entering the workforce, so I asked my parents for guidance. My parents migrated from Mexico and only had an elementary school education. They told me that high school was the best they could give me, and that if I wanted to go to college I would have to pave my own path and work to help support the family. I started to work in a company and soon realized that I had more to give to society. At that time, I knew that my life was about to take a turn. I was afraid of the decision that I was about to make, but I knew that if others could attend college, so could I.

I enrolled in the College of Office Technology in the data entry program and graduated with a certificate within a year. I was so proud, but discovered that the jobs I was being offered were entry level. I went back to obtain an associate degree from the same college to further my career opportunities. Unfortunately, after receiving my associates, I found out that it was not an accredited college. Then, I researched City Colleges of Chicago, and a new dream was born. My dream was to become a teacher so I could help students reach their potential and make their dreams come true. During my visit to the various colleges, I felt that Wilbur Wright College would be the best institution to start the journey to my professional career in education. It took me eight years to obtain my Associate in Arts degree. On graduation day I felt a sense of accomplishment and success, but I knew that I was only halfway through my academic journey. Thanks to all the guidance from the Wright College staff and faculty, I transferred to Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU).

During my academic journey, I met my wife and had two children. I earned by Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from NEIU in 2004. Upon graduation I was hired as a teacher at Jose de Diego Elementary School where I taught for ten years. During the course of my tenure, I earned my master’s degree in mathematics from DePaul University. Currently, I teach at Sabin Dual Language Magnet School. I also obtained my bilingual certification from Dominican University and continue to be a lifelong learner.

My adult children have followed in my footsteps by choosing to attend Wright College. My daughter is a proud 2021 Wright College graduate who has also chosen to pursue a career in education and currently attends Northeastern Illinois University. My son a 2022 freshman who is pursuing an Associate in Science degree with a focus on computer engineering. Without a doubt, Wilbur Wright College has paved the way for my family’s professional careers!

Mi trayectoria académica comenzó cuando tenía 19 años. Al graduarme de la escuela secundaria, estaba en conflicto entre asistir
a la universidad o ingresar a la fuerza laboral, así que les pedíorientación a mis padres. Mis padres emigraron de México y solo
tenían educación primaria. Me dijeron que la escuela secundaria era lo mejor que me podían dar y que si quería ir a la universidad tendría que hacerlo por mi propia cuenta y tendría que trabajar para ayudar a mantener a la familia. Empecé a trabajar en una empresa y pronto me di cuenta de que tenía habilidades y talentos para contribuir en mayor medida a la sociedad. En ese momento supe que mi vida estaba a punto de dar un giro. Tenía miedo de la decisión que estaba tomando, pero sabía que, si otros podían asistir a la universidad, yo también podría hacerlo.

Me inscribí en el Colegio de Tecnología de Oficina en el programa de entrada de datos y me gradué con un certificado en un año. Estaba muy orgulloso, pero descubrí que los trabajos que me ofrecían eran de nivel básico. Regresé para obtener un título de un grado asociado del mismo
colegio para obtener mejores oportunidades profesionales. Desafortunadamente, después de recibir mi grado asociados descubrí que no era una un colegio acreditado. Investigué las oportunidades que ofrecen los colegios comunitarios de Chicago, y nació un nuevo sueño. Mi sueño era convertirme en maestro de escuela primaria para poder ayudar a los estudiantes a alcanzar su potencial y hacer realidad sus sueños académicos. Durante mi visita a los distintos colegios, sentí que Wilbur Wright sería la mejor institución para iniciar el camino hacia mi carrera profesional en educación. Me tomó ocho años obtener mi grado Asociado en Artes. El día de mi graduación sentí una sensación de logro y éxito, pero sabía que solo estaba a la mitad de mi viaje académico. Gracias a toda la orientación del personal y la facultad de Wright, me transferí a la Universidad del Noreste de Illinois (NEIU).
Durante mi trayectoria académica, conocí a mi esposa y tuve dos hijos. Obtuve una Licenciatura en Artes en Educación Primaria de NEIU en 2004. Después de graduarme, fui contratado como maestro en la Escuela Primaria José de Diego, donde enseñé durante diez años. Durante el transcurso de mi mandato, obtuve mi maestría en matemáticas de la Universidad DePaul.

Actualmente, enseño en Escuela Primaria Sabin de Lenguaje Dual. También obtuve mi certificación bilingüe de la Universidad Dominican y sigo siendo un aprendiz de por vida. Mis hijos han seguido mis pasos al elegir asistir a Wright. Mi hija se graduó de Wright en el 2021 y también eligió seguir una carrera en educación y actualmente asiste a la Universidad Noreste de Illinois. Actualmente mi hijo también es estudiante de Wright de primer año que estudia ingeniería informática. ¡Sin duda, Wilbur Wright ha sido clave en las carreras profesionales de mi familia.
