With a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Communication from the University of Arkansas, Zach Cash has had eight exciting years working behind the scenes for the Big Ten Network, then at McCormick Place to support large corporate conventions. This past summer he worked the BMW Golf Championship and earlier in September, he was on the sidelines of the Bears game at Soldier Field. But one thing was missing: the fans.

With COVID-19 health and safety measures in place across the country, the video engineering gigs that were once plentiful have slowed to a trickle since March. Knowing it may be a while before he can work in that field full time, Zach decided to bulk up his resume and return to school – virtually – at Daley College.

“I’ve always been interested in cybersecurity and computer networking – it’s very related to the TV industry,” he explained.

After some research, he found that not only were City Colleges the most affordable option around, but that he could earn an in-demand basic certificate within a year.

“City Colleges’ tuition costs make this so much more accessible for people like me who are working less now,” Zach said.

He jumped in with both feet, taking five classes this fall. It has not been without its challenges, but Zach has a plan – and support from his professors. He also borrowed a laptop for free through the Loaner Laptop program, which any City Colleges student can take advantage of.

Next semester, he is hoping to work more and take fewer classes. His plan to is to start in the IT field as soon as he can, and show employers what he can do.
