Lisa Faser didn’t intend on being a personal trainer.

After growing up in Arizona and graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in theater, her plans to become an actress brought her to Chicago. Her plans changed for many reasons, and it was here that she became interested in becoming a physical therapy assistant. In order for that to happen, though, she needed to first take some prerequisite courses at Malcolm X College. Those classes were in the Personal Fitness Training (PFT) program, and that’s where she found her passion.

Lisa, 47, will earn her PFT certificate from Malcolm X at the end of the fall 2018 semester. She’ll then sit for her national certification exam and start full-time at The Space, a gym in Hyde Park where she currently interns.

Lisa credits student advising and the staff and faculty at Malcolm X for allowing her to navigate the classes and requirements needed to earn her the career she just recently realized she wanted.

“Everyone is so responsive and helpful,” she said. “I always feel supported and encouraged, and that’s key when you are pursuing a brand new career.”
